Beauty Jargon Defined: 10 Beauty Terms Explained

The world of beauty and cosmetics can be a confusing one, there are so many words and phrases that are completely lost to you. Like what the hell is a cut crease? and what’s the difference between a shader brush and a blending brush? Well don’t worry you no longer have to ponder these questions, here are 10 beauty words and phrases defined!

  1. Strobing: (verb)

“To place highlighter in large amounts to the high points of your face (particularly along the cheekbone) to make features pop without the use of heavy contouring.

2. Baking: (verb)

“To set a thick layer of concealer with a layer of powder you allow to sit on the skin before dusting the majority of it away.”

3. Cut Crease: (noun)

“When applying eye shadow only in either the natural crease or drawing a line (cutting) just above the crease, very defined and sharp, creating a separation between the actual lid and the upper eye area then blending that line outward towards the brow. This also can make your lid appear bigger making the eyes seem bigger.”

4. Squareletto: (adjective)

“An up-and-coming nail shape that is super long, like stiletto nails, but squared off at the tip.”

5. Hit Pan: (verb)

“When you come to the end of a palette or compact and have to scrape out the remaining contents.”

6. Tan-touring: (noun)

“The art of using self-tanner to contour by applying it whenever you’d typically apply bronzer.”

7. Foiling: (verb)

“Applying eye shadow with a wet brush to create a shiny, foil-like effect.”

8. Lipstick Feathering: (noun)

“When lipstick bleeds into the lines and wrinkles around your lips.”

9. Chroming: (verb)

“Using lipstick as a highlighter when you’re short on time.”

10. Tightlining: (verb)

“Applying eyeliner to the upper waterline to give the appearance of thicker eyelashes and bigger eyes.”

12 Tips For Coping With Anxiety

Anxiety is something many people deal with on a daily basis and is a truly crippling condition that can effect every aspect of a persons life. I have personally suffered from anxiety since a very young age. It can make you feel completely isolated and alone, it can stop you leaving the house, impact your relationships with family and friends and fear everything around you. Over the years I have tried everything possible to ease my anxiety, here are the best tips and tricks I have found for coping with anxiety.

  1. Practice yoga – this is my absolute favourite item on the list, yoga completely relaxes your body and mind.
  2. Laugh, even if you want to cry, laugh it out I promise you will feel better.
  3. Learn what your triggers are, this could be a place, a situation or even a person. Learn what your triggers are and see if there are ways you can overcome or avoid them.
  4. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), there are a number of different ways to carry out CBT, but the over all aim is to reprogram they way you think about and respond to your anxiety.
  5. Write down your thoughts, it will help de-clutter your brain.
  6. Talk to someone, whether it’s a friend, family member or professional just telling someone what you’re thinking and feeling will make you feel 100x better.
  7. It’s okay to cry – if things are getting too much cry it out!
  8. Practice mindfulness. When your thoughts start to run wild try practicing mindfulness it will help bring you back to the present.
  9. Try breathing techniques, something you can do any where at any time. There are tons of breathing techniques you can try to find the best one to suit you.
  10. Treat yourself – if you’re having a bad day indulge in something you really enjoy.
  11. Muscle relaxation, one body part at a time tense your muscles then relax, this relieves a lot of tension.
  12. Take a break, don’t beat yourself up for not managing to overcome your anxiety today, sit back, relax and try again tomorrow.
